Launching a startup is an incredibly rewarding and exciting experience and we know that you want to get your new business up and running as soon as possible. Well, the good news is that you can!

Since the Covid-19 pandemic hit the UK, many entrepreneurial people have started side hustles and launched new businesses. Encouragingly, I recently read that 8 startups have raised funding since the Covid-19 lockdown.

Step by step guide to launching your startup

By following the steps outlined below, your startup dream can also become a reality in no time at all!

Note: we use the term ‘startup’ very loosely here in the context of starting a new business.

Pre-Startup Considerations

Every entrepreneur’s startup journey begins with an idea. But you need to think through the practicalities about bringing your idea to life? It’s important to do a business plan and prepare for any challenges you might face.  Also, join online Startup communities on Facebook and LinkedIn. Reddit is another great resource and I highly recommend joining the Reddit Startups community.  Learn from and connect with others in your industry as it will make your startup journey that little bit easier.

Startup Finances

If you need to borrow money to fund your startup, the good news is that there are many avenues you can explore including online platforms like Funding Circle.  The UK government are also trying to encourage people to set up businesses and working hard to ensure this gains momentum.

Startup Practicalities

You also need to take care of the practicalities of setting up your business including which form your business will take. For the majority of people, it’s a choice between sole trader or a limited company.

Startup Branding

If you want to build a kickass startup, you need to build a kickass brand identity! This includes your visual brand identity (logo, colour palette, typography) and your tone of voice. Many people mistakingly think a brand is made by just having a logo but there is much more to it than that. Your brand must reflect your mission, vision and values and engage with your target market.

Startup Website

Although not crucial, having a website has its benefits for your startup.  A website is basically your ‘shop window’ and gives your business more credibility. If you can’t afford a professional website designer you can do your own website using sites like WordPress and Squarespace. However, make sure it looks professional and your website content is SEO friendly. Each website page should have a minimum of 350 words and where possible add clear CTAs (Call-To-Action). Also, add a newsletter subscriber form and a lead magnet to the Home page or your blog.

Startup Tools

To run your business efficiently, you are going to need various kickass apps and tools to save you time, supercharge your productivity, keep you organised, manage your finances and so on. Many are free but some incur monthly charges so you need to budget for these.

Brave have developed a comprehensive library of really helpful documents which you can download and simply tailor to your startup’s needs.

Social Media

Social media marketing has many benefits for startups.  Research has found that  21% of people are more likely to buy from brands with an active social media presence. However, you don’t need to have a profile on every platform – find out where your target audience hangs out on social media and create 2 or 3 accounts max. If you have a website with a blog you will also have original content to share on social media and it will help your SEO.

Digital Marketing

Digital marketing is basically advertising delivered through digital channels such as social media, mobile applications, email, web applications, search engines, websites, or any new digital channel. We love email marketing and it’s a cheap and effective way for your startup to begin the process of turning website visitors into paying customers. It’s easy to create a subscriber form (and lead magnet) on your website to capture visitors email addresses. Sign up to an email marketing tool like Mailchimp to manage your campaigns and use Canva to create kickass graphics!

Paid Ads

If you have the budget, paid ads will help you reach a larger audience but aren’t necessary.
